De Kooning moved between abstraction and figuration and let one mode alter the other in an innovative exchange. In Figure, lines are superimposed and limbs erased and reformed. Part of a series that contributed some of the most compelling images of the human form of the 20th century, Figure embodies both seduction and threat, reflecting common perceptions around the gradually emancipating social status of women at mid century.
