Cross
Cross, Italy, Venice, late 13th century c. 1280-1300
1927.169 Not on display
Tradition holds that this cross-a treasure object destined for a private chapel-belonged to King Rudolph I of Hapsburg in Prague (1218-1291). Venice was one of the most important centers of rock crystal cutting at the end of the thirteenth century. The attributon for the cross rests upon that fact and its stylistic relationship to a small group of surviving crosses believed to have been made in Venice about the same time.
