Mellon Fellow in Textiles Conservation

Conservation

The museum’s conservation department seeks applicants for an Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for Advanced Training in Textile Conservation. This appointment begins no earlier than October 2013 and may be extended for up to an additional two years. The Mellon Fellow will take part in all aspects of installation and preventative care and preservation activities concerning the museum’s encyclopedic textile collection. The Fellow will have the opportunity for in-depth examination and treatment of textiles, research related to the collection, and to participate in a wide range of conservation activities with conservators, collections care specialists and curators. The significant resources of the museum, including the library and archives, and nearby Case Western Reserve University, contribute to the fellowship program. Fellows are encouraged to carry out a research project culminating in a publishable paper.

The fellowship includes a $30,000 stipend, health insurance, paid time off and a travel/research allowance.

Graduates from recognized training programs or candidates with equivalent training will be considered. Applicants should have no more than five years of conservation-related work experience. A proven record of research and writing ability, as well as English-language skills, is required.

For consideration, please submit the following materials in English: a letter stating your interests and intent in applying for the fellowship; résumé including basic biographical information, current and permanent addresses, and telephone numbers, and a description of previous conservation experience and internships; several samples of examination reports and treatment records with photographs; the names and contact information for three references from conservation professionals familiar with your work.

Only those selected for interviews will be contacted. After a preliminary selection, final candidates may be invited for an interview. A portfolio of conservation treatments and research should be presented by the candidate at the interview. At that time the candidate should be prepared to give a 20 minute PowerPoint presentation.
