William M. Griswold, Director and President
William M. Griswold was appointed director of the Cleveland Museum of Art in May 2014. The institution’s ninth director, he leads the 450-member team responsible for building the museum’s collection, deepening its long-standing engagement with the local community, and elevating its profile both nationally and internationally. Since his arrival in Cleveland, he has overseen the 2016 celebration of the museum’s centennial, as well as the conclusion of the $320 million campaign that made possible its recent renovation and expansion according to designs by Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly. In 2016, Dr. Griswold led a strategic-planning initiative that will guide the museum as it begins a second century of growth and public service.
Dr. Griswold’s tenure at the Cleveland Museum of Art follows his term as the fifth director of the Morgan Library & Museum, in New York. During the seven years that he was director, he spearheaded the development of the Morgan’s collection, exhibition program and curatorial departments, adding photography as an area of focus. He oversaw a number of important exhibitions and scholarly exchanges with leading international museums, including the Louvre, the Courtauld Institute of Art, the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich, and the Royal Library (Biblioteca Reale) in Turin.
He previously served as director and president of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, from 2005 to 2007; acting director and chief curator of the J. Paul Getty Museum, from 2004 to 2005; and associate director for collections at the Getty, from 2001. Prior to joining the Getty, Dr. Griswold had been Charles W. Engelhard Curator and Head of the Department of Drawings and Prints at the Morgan Library since 1995. From 1988 until 1995, he was assistant and later associate curator in the Department of Drawings and Prints at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Formerly president of Master Drawings Association and a member of the boards of directors of both the Courtauld Institute of Art and the American Trust for the British Library, Dr. Griswold is a member of the Association of Art Museum Directors and currently serves on the boards of the American Federation of Arts and American Friends of the Shanghai Museum. In 2008, he received the insignia of Chevalier of the French Order of Arts and Letters, and in 2015 he was awarded the medal of Cambodia’s Royal Order of Sahametrei. Dr. Griswold earned his Bachelor’s degree at Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut, and his Ph.D. at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London.
