Director of Museum Services

The Director of Museum Services of the Cleveland Museum of Art has primary responsibility for the care and management of the Museum’s collections and for overseeing a broad range of support services required for the development and presentation of special exhibitions.

As a senior manager within the institution, the Director of Museum Services oversees several departments, including Collections Management, Conservation, Design & Installation, Photographic Services, and the Ingalls Library. S/he is responsible for managing and coordinating the work of these departments, especially in support of the ongoing presentation and utilization of the collections and the Museum’s special exhibitions program. In this capacity, the Director of Museum Services prepares and manages the divisional budget, participates in institutional planning, assists with resource development, and represents the division in the development and implementation of special projects.

Position Responsibilities

Oversees and coordinates the work of all of departments responsible for collections management functions, including the transportation, storage, documentation and display of works of art from the collection and on loan to the museum.

Works closely with the Chief Conservator, the Director of the Ingalls Library, the Registrar, the Director of Design & Installation, and Director of Photographic Services, providing oversight for day-to-day operations, budget planning and management, strategic planning, and resource development for each of the departments under his/her supervision.

Works closely with the Chief Curator and Exhibitions Manager on the planning and implementation of the Museum’s special exhibitions program. Serves as a member of the Museum’s Exhibitions Committee and coordinates all of the activities of the Museum Services division required for the development and presentation of special exhibitions.

Represents his/her division in all institutional planning efforts and ensures that the goals and priorities established for the departments under his/her supervision will fulfill the mission of the museum and adhere to best practices in the field.

Working in consultation with the members of various departments, including Conservation, Protection Services, and Facilities Management, develops and regularly updates all policies related to the documentation, care and management of the collections.

Working in consultation with the Museum’s technology staff, plans and coordinates the development and maintenance of all computing resources (hardware and software) that are utilized for the management of the collections (i.e., the Museum’s collection of works of art and the holdings of the Ingalls Library) to ensure that they fulfill institutional objectives and are coordinated with related uses of computing (e.g., for marketing or interpretation) in the Museum.

Works closely with the Directors of Protection Services and Facilities Management to ensure that the Museum’s physical plant is managed in manner that ensures the safety and proper care of the collections. Participates in emergency and disaster planning and leads the conservation department’s efforts in response to an emergency or disaster. Represents Museum Services division as a member of the facilities management team, ensuring that all decisions regarding the maintenance and improvement of the facility are made with proper consideration for the needs of the collections.

 

Qualifications

 

Position Requirements
M.A. in Art History or Museum Studies, or the equivalent.

Five years in a senior management position in a general art museum, or the equivalent, with significant experience in the development and presentation of special exhibitions.

A broad knowledge of museum practices, especially in the areas of collections management and exhibitions management and implementation.

A demonstrated ability to work successfully with others e.g., museum staff, volunteers, and diverse public constituencies to achieve institutional objectives.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

An ability to work with databases, word processing, and other computing tools that the staff is expected to use on a regular basis.

Development Services Specialist

The Cleveland Museum of Art is currently accepting applications for the position of Development Services Specialist.  This position has the responsibility of ensuring the proper maintenance of files and donor records as well as ensuring that charitable donations are handled in the most efficient, effective and current manner that follow all established legal requirements, guidelines, policies, and procedures.  The Development Services Specialist supervises a team of two development coordinators who are charged with the tasks of: processing charitable gifts made to the museum; maintaining all donor and prospect related information in the Enterprise database; and ensuring the effective preservation and usage of all physical files related to donors, gifts, and prospects.  In addition, s/he will play an active role in the timely analysis and reporting of all charitable gifts, grants, and pledges to senior museum administration, including the Director and the Board of Trustees.

 

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree (B. A.) in related field; six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Seven to ten years work experience in development services as well as direct fundraising data and gift administration preferred. Demonstrated skills in the following areas:  analyzing situations quickly and accurately, as well as devising and executing an effective course of action; the ability to understand and apply complex regulations, policies and procedures, with emphasis on IRS regulations governing charitable giving; excellent understanding and knowledge of database management, tools, procedures, and practices; proven statistical and data analysis skills as well as in-depth understanding of data acquisition methods, techniques, and sources (including electronic sources); proven design and analysis skills, and understanding of the principles and practices of systems development; ability to develop concrete plans and achieve defined goals with limited direction; proven skill in completing complex projects using independent judgment; proven ability to relate solution requirements to programming and other museum staff;  understanding of quality service.  Previous experience in staff management required. Experience with Enterprise or other sophisticated donor database as well as proficiency in Crystal Reporting is highly desired. 


Associate Director for Interpretation

The Associate Director for Interpretation will be a department leader in the Division of Education and Public Programs. In this capacity, the individual advocates for the creation of optimal learning encounters between the museum collections, special exhibitions and CMA visitors; particularly (but not exclusively) casual and frequent adult visitors as well as university students engaged in academic studies.  The position works collaboratively with the education, curatorial, exhibition, design, and technology departments to design interpretive strategies that present works of art with diverse perspectives, making the collections relevant to our visitors.  The position interacts closely with the curatorial, exhibitions, design, and publications departments to fulfill the responsibilities for interpretation and works with all museum departments to design and manage internship experiences within the museum.  Externally, the Associate Director for Interpretation works with professional colleagues in partnership with universities and organizations to design internships and interdisciplinary learning opportunities for students pursuing academic studies. 

 

Interpretation Responsibilities

1. Works with curatorial, exhibitions, education and design departments to create an interpretive plan for exhibitions and the new galleries reinstallations.  Collaborates with curators, education design, marketing, and the performing arts departments in related programming, being an advocate for visitor and community engagement in order to amplify interpretive messages in programs both internally and externally. 

2. Creates and implements (with the curatorial and educational staff) exhibition programs and program budget management; coordinates programming details with internal staff.

3. Serves on planning committees such as the Life Long Learning Center committee, and co-chairs the content committee for content creation in key areas of the center.

4. Serves on the Steering Committee for the gallery reinstallations and manages the interpretation process.

5. Contributes lectures on the collection and exhibitions for CMA public, docents, and teachers. 
 

    External Responsibilities

    1. Serves as the academic liaison with the Case Western Reserve University and CMA art history program to coordinate and develop the museum studies program and the annual orientation program, in addition to coordinating and managing interns placed throughout the museum. This position also serves as the museum’s liaison with the Cuyahoga Community College partnership to create area-studies classes around special exhibitions; teaches in these interdisciplinary classes.

    2. Serves as the museum’s liaison in the partnership with Cleveland Clinic in creating a program that builds upon the intersection between the observation skills and the connoisseurship between art and medicine.

    3. Seeks opportunities for other academic liaisons with universities.

    Qualifications

    MA/PhD in Art History or equivalent in career experience along with 3-5 years experience.  The successful candidate will also have strong written and oral communication skills along with a proven ability to work with teams in a museum environment.  Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills as well as the ability meet deadlines, prioritize and manage budgets are essential to this position.


    Assistant Director of Donor Relations

    The Cleveland Museum of Art is currently seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Director of Donor Relations.  To enhance the museum’s relationship with its constituents during the Campaign for The Cleveland Museum of Art and beyond, this individual has the primary responsibility of developing, implementing and managing a program of donor stewardship and cultivation.

     

    Qualifications

    The primary responsibilities of this position include:

    1. Design, implement, evaluate and manage a cultivation and stewardship program to enhance the museum’s relationship with selected friends, supporters, donors and other constituents as required. This includes working closely with the deputy director of development and external affairs, director of development, and senior development officers to expand recognition efforts, outreach, stewardship and cultivation events and programs to advance the museum’s development efforts.

    2. In partnership with directors and associate directors of development, develop, implement, and communicate strategic programs and activities for donors and prospective donors that advance its development efforts, including those involving the expansion and renovation plan as well as ongoing steady state support.

    3. Serve as the liaison between the development and special events departments to ensure timely coordination of events and programs and to alleviate potential conflicts and concerns.

    4. Oversees communication of donor related events and programs to the appropriate parties.

    5. Assure timely coordination with development services to ensure that event information is consistently and accurately entered into the fundraising database and to prepare event invitation/attendance reports. 

    Some evening and weekend hours are required.

    Requirements
    The successful candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree (BA) and a minimum of five years related experience in fundraising/stewardship positions and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience with demonstrated success.
