Seated Statue of Amenhotep IV (Akhenaten)
New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, reign of Amenhotep IV/Akhenaten, 1353-1337 BC
Yellow stone
Musée du Louvre N 831 = AF 109
cat. no. 13

Seated comfortably on his cushioned throne, Akhenaten wears the nemes-headdress and holds a crook and flail, conventional attributes of kingship. The dreamy expression, heavy-lidded eyes, and full, sensuous mouth, are characteristic of all of this pharaoh's portraits, as are the pierced shaped navel.

The statue is not complete. The lower part has been restored, and originally a queen sat at the king's side. Her right forearm remains wrapped around his back.
