Description

Circular ornaments were worn as pendants, sewn onto textiles, or pinned into hair. The decorative motif made of colorful gems depicting flowering plants was introduced during the reign of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (1628–58) and remained popular through the 1800s.
A circular gold medallion features an intricate openwork design of symmetrical filigree swirls. At its center, a ruby is set within a petaled gold flower. Four clusters of three green gems radiate toward an outer ring of eight alternating red and green stones. Each gem is held in a pointed gold setting. A small hanging loop is attached to the top edge of this ornate, radial pendant.
