Description

Native Californians used working burden baskets, carried on the back with the aid of a tumpline that passed around the forehead, to carry all kinds of food and many other items. At the turn of the century, some weavers made scaled-down versions like this one for use as cornucopias in table arrangements in American homes.
A conical, light tan woven basket tapers from a wide, circular rim to a narrow base. Dark reddish-brown bands of stacked zigzags wrap around the sedge body in repeating horizontal rows. The rim is decorated with alternating dark and light stripes above fine horizontal rows of twining. This uniform structure creates a ribbed texture across the exterior, emphasizing the sharp geometric contrast between the dark patterns and the light background.
