Description

This finely woven basin is based on a traditional form that young Pomo women used to wash themselves after ceremonial seclusion following their first menses. The example on display, however, was made for the outside market.
A wide, flared basket bowl woven from fiber rises from a flat base. The exterior is wrapped in horizontal bands of dark brown and tan that form geometric, stepped patterns, accented with reddish orange stitching. The upper section is decorated with a fringe of small black and red feathers and strands of white shell discs. From the rim, three sets of shell strands hang, terminating in large, iridescent pendants.
