Description

These baskets were probably created to be sold to non-Indian collectors and tourists. The feathered basket, however, is based on an older type that was given as a treasured gift on various occasions, including ceremonies that marked the stages of life (birth, puberty, marriage, and so forth).
A wide, open-mouthed coiled sedge and bulrush basket tapers to a flat base. The tan surface features dark brown, stepped geometric patterns winding around the walls in zigzagging bands. Flat, white circular beads edge the outer rim, with a small loop of matching beads hanging over the side. Punctuating the dark woven designs, small, reddish-orange tufts project from the exterior with fine textures.
