Description

Although this basket probably was not made for native use, the feathered basket is based on an older type that was exchanged among natives as a treasured gift on such occasions as ceremonies that marked the stages of life. The feathers and shell beads are symbols of prestige and wealth.
A shallow round basket features an exterior covered in iridescent green feathers accented with small patches of bright yellow. A row of white shell beads circles the rim, while a tall, triangular handle of white beads rises from the sides. Woven from bulrush and sedge, the interior rim displays a pattern of alternating light and dark brown horizontal bands, blending organic textures with delicate beadwork.
