Description

Miniature baskets were made to demonstrate the basket-maker’s virtuoso skill, and these tiny marvels seem to be no exception—the smallest are just a few millimeters wide but still patterned. For such fine work, dexterity was required as much for preparation of materials as for weaving.
A miniature basketry vessel of natural tan fibers takes a squat, oval shape with rounded sides. Coiled construction creates a finely textured surface of repeating horizontal ridges. Around the middle, dark brown fibers form a jagged band of geometric patterns. The vessel curves inward toward the top opening, making the rim narrower than its midpoint. The base is flat, resting on a neutral surface where a soft shadow falls behind the low vessel.
