Did You Know?

To make a rubbing, a moistened sheet of paper is laid over an image and tamped with an ink pad that then colors the raised areas, while leaving concave sections and incised lines white.

Description

The procession of figures, riders, and chariots correspond in part to a section from the east wall in stone chamber 2 of the Wu Liang shrine.
A horizontally oriented ink rubbing on mottled tan paper depicts two registers of dark, silhouetted figures. In the upper register, horse-drawn chariots and riders move to the right among small birdlike forms. The lower register shows figures on foot, some kneeling, alongside more horses and chariots. Vertical cartouches with text separate several figures. The grainy composition features flat, solid shapes against a weathered, textured background.
