Description

A splendid example of the decorated pottery known as "palace ware," made only in Dynasty XVIII. It is painted with garlands imitating the real flowers with which vessels were draped at banquets. This vase was found in the palace of Amenhotep III at southern Thebes.
A tan marl clay vessel features a rounded body and a tall cylindrical neck with a chipped rim. A sculpted animal head with long painted horns projects from the neck's base. Concentric bands of muted red, gray, and black circle the upper body with rows of downward-pointing triangles, dashed lines, and stylized petals. Below, the vessel shows plain, matte clay.
