Description

The block which will print the outline has now been completely cut. Ink is rolled across the surface and a sheet of paper is placed on top. Pressure is applied to the back of the sheet of paper—or the block can be put in a press—so that the ink transfers to the paper.
A vertically oriented woodblock depicts a figure with a wide-brimmed hat and overalls leaning over a wooden fence. Reaching toward round fruits on a branch, the figure's form is defined by deep black surfaces and light, recessed gouges. Heavy carved lines create a coarse, wood-grain texture across the fence and clothing. Standing on a small mound, the figure is set against vertical patterns in a high-contrast composition.
