Description

An impression of the outline block is placed on this block while the ink is still wet. By applying pressure to the back of the sheet of paper, the design is transferred to the block. The wood around the areas that will be printed in color is cut away. The surface of the block is inked in green. To create the final chiaroscuro woodcut, first the tone block is printed in green, and then the outline block is printed in black over it. The white of the paper acts as highlights.
A dark brown woodblock with pronounced vertical grain is scarred by rhythmic gouges and incisions. In the upper portion, scattered horizontal nicks surround a prominent, horseshoe-shaped carving that reveals the pale wood beneath. Below, dense curtains of fine, vertical lines create a textured screen. Additional jagged marks punctuate the lower right and center, while a thin, uncarved margin runs along the bottom edge.
