Description

Much of the Mughals’ wealth derived from the international export of textiles, which became increasingly fashionable throughout Europe and America during the 18th century. This garment was made in India for the aristocratic French market. The floral designs inspired by the southern Indian dyed fabrics known as palampore have been enlivened by labor-intensive gilding and burnishing.
A floor-length cotton coat is covered with heavily patterned reddish pink and blue flowers, winding over a solid cream background. The flowers are detailed with fine rows of petals, radiating striations, checkered patterns, and organic patterns, and connected to one another by fine lines sprouting tiny buds on either side. The opening of the coat reveals a light-gray interior.
