The High Level Bridge, Cleveland

The High Level Bridge, Cleveland

1926

Rudolph Ruzicka

(American, born Bohemia, 1883-1978)

Pencil and crayon

Gift of the Artist 1938.282

Description

In 1926, the Print Club of Cleveland commissioned
Ruzicka to produce a work for its members. He
spent several months sketching in the Flats before
selecting the recently constructed “High Level” or
Detroit-Superior Bridge as his subject. He used this
pencil and colored-crayon sketch to produce the
adjacent color woodcut of the same title. Obviously
working outdoors in the Flats, Ruzicka rendered the
scene with remarkably sure and precise drawing.
