Did You Know?

On their samplers the orphans often embroidered the initials of relatives.

Description

Orphaned as a child, Willemijntje was sent to the Burgerweeshuis (Citizen's Orphanage) in Amsterdam along with her three sisters. While there, she embroidered her own name along the top edge.
A square cream linen sampler features a central embroidery of a red-roofed house. Four patterned rectangular bands frame the scene, surrounded by scattered geometrical cross and star motifs in muted red, blue, and tan silk. Various embroidered names and stylized initials punctuate the field. Red lettering at the bottom corner marks the year "Anno 1900." Faint blue staining appears along the upper left edge of the aged fabric.
