Description

This plaque, once the right wing of a diptych (two-paneled carving), was slightly altered during its history by carving an arc into the sides, perhaps to force it into a frame. The silver base, added after 1919, is signed: "M. Bucellati, Milano, Roma, Firenze."
Carved in ivory, Christ hangs on a cross under two pointed arches, his head tilted toward his right shoulder and ribs indicated by shallow lines. A vertical crack runs through the center. To the left, a figure stands with hands joined in prayer. To the right, another figure raises a hand toward their face. The plaque rests on an ornate silver base featuring repetitive, decorative patterns that flare toward the bottom.
