watercolor and gouache over graphite, Sheet: 77.20 x 50.00 cm (30 3/8 x 19 5/8 inches); Secondary Support: 77.50 x 50.00 cm (30 1/2 x 19 5/8 inches). Gift of Mrs. Louise M. Dunn in memory of Henry G. Keller 1949.544
Painted in December 1917, this watercolor is generally considered the masterpiece of Burchfield's early visionary phase. Salem, Ohio was largely constructed in the mid 19th-century, and the artist was fascinated by the creepy qualities of the gloomy Gothic architecture of that period.
