Did You Know?

A fichu is a large, square kerchief worn by women to fill in the low neckline of a bodice.

Description

This square textile is made of fine piña fiber in plain weave. It has a wide hand-embroidered cotton border on all sides, featuring scalloped edges and repeating floral and geometric motifs. Small embroidered floral elements are scattered across the interior field. This object was probably worn as a fichu or neck covering.
A square-shaped piece of translucent, off-white piña cloth features delicate embroidery. Along the bottom and our right edges, a wide border of repeating geometric openwork and floral motifs provides a decorative frame. Small floral sprigs are scattered across the center. All four edges are finished with a delicate scalloped border. The thin fabric shows some unevenness and fraying along the top and our left edges, highlighting its fine, handmade quality.
