Did You Know?

The word lace derives from the Latin laqueus, meaning noose.

Description

The darning, or area of woven pattern, on these two attached panels is much thicker than the ground. In the center, a tree is flanked by four-legged animals, perhaps horses, lions, or griffins.
A vertical rectangular bleached linen needle lace panel features an off-white grid-like background divided into two nearly identical registers. Each section displays a central stylized tree flanked by four-legged animals. These figures are created by darning thread through the mesh, forming solid forms against the open-work ground. The monochromatic textile showcases a mirrored composition where repetitive geometric motifs and figurative patterns are defined by the varying density of the cream threads.
