Description

Although this basket probably was not made for native use, the feathered basket is based on an older type that was exchanged among natives as a treasured gift on such occasions as ceremonies that marked the stages of life. The feathers and shell beads are symbols of prestige and wealth.
A circular woven basket features a central spiral of dense, reddish-brown feathers accented by green flecks. Twelve radiating lines of white clam shells and triangular iridescent pendants extend like spokes across the textured surface. The outer rim is defined by a ring of white shells and a fringe of dark, pointed feathers. The bowl presents a rhythmic, concentric composition of natural fibers, shells, and dark plumage against a neutral background.
