Description

Although this basket probably was not made for native use, the feathered basket is based on an older type that was exchanged among natives as a treasured gift on such occasions as ceremonies that marked the stages of life. The feathers and shell beads are symbols of prestige and wealth.
A sedge and mallard feather basketry bowl features a dense surface of dark green, yellow, and black feathers. Small, white shell discs line the outer rim, while four braided cords tipped with shells extend toward the center. Similar pendants hang from the lower edge. In the middle, the yellow and green feathers form an interlocking, star-like pattern. Feathers arranged at the center suggest the points of a blossom.
