Description

Small, delicately carved ivory plaques were set into wooden shrines, carved with architectural motifs. This sculpted plaque would have once flanked a central seated Buddha, with a similar standing or walking Buddha on the opposite side. The pleated garment folds derived from Greco-Roman styles adopted in the ancient region of Gandhara, west of Kashmir, where this sculpture was made.
A cream-colored ivory carving depicts a walking Buddha wearing a deeply folded robe draped over one shoulder. He has a rounded protrusion on his head and holds his left hand to his chest. Five figures, roughly a third his size, surround him: one kneels at his feet while others cluster at his sides and over his head. Dark brown accents define the deep folds and features throughout the sculpture.
