Description

On a plain golden tan ground is a dark band containing two rows of a plaited Kufic inscription woven in the weft direction. The golden tan lettering within each band is oriented in the warp direction. The upper inscription row is three times larger than lower. The plain area below the inscription band and the inscription band are woven in compound tabby. The plain area above inscription band is woven in 3/1 broken twill.
A rectangular silk textile fragment features a medium brown background with two horizontal bands of dark brown Kufic script across the center. Tall vertical forms with floriated tops repeat along the upper band, while smaller calligraphic groupings sit below. Numerous horizontal tears across the lower half and top left corner reveal light underlying threads. The cloth has frayed, uneven edges and significant wear throughout.
