These creatures stand for shakti, or creative energy.

Description

Composite creatures with the body of a lion, tusks and trunk of an elephant, and horns of an antelope are standard elements of medieval Indian architecture and furniture. Traces of pigment indicate that these ivory furniture facings were brightly painted.
Carved from aged ivory, this sculpture depicts a rearing mythical creature with an elephant's trunk and lion-like body. Facing left, it features bulging eyes, curved horns, and paws held near its mouth. Intricate, rhythmic patterns decorate the torso, while a scroll-like form curls toward the base. Dark pigment highlights the deep carvings of the off-white material. Rectangular tabs extend from the top and bottom, suggesting its original use as a decorative mount.
