Description

This is one of three panels of silk netting that would have been cut out and sewn into a gown. This section was for a sleeve. The airy fabric is embroidered in gold, white, blues, pinks, and violets with designs of phoenix birds, chrysanthemums, and symbols of longevity.
A rectangular light-blue silk gauze panel features a large triangular section of dense embroidery in the lower right corner. Enclosed by a dark, braided border, two golden-tan phoenixes with sweeping tail feathers soar amidst pink, purple, and white peony blossoms. Stylized gold longevity emblems are scattered throughout the scene. The translucent blue fabric remains unadorned elsewhere, emphasizing the intricate gold and pastel-colored needlework.
