Description

Emperors Jahangir and Shah Jahan both admired jade. The material linked them to their ancestor Timur, whose tombstone in Samarkand was carved from a large piece of jade. This platter probably would have been used for serving fruit at courtly gatherings.
A circular jade platter features a wide, flat rim surrounding a shallow basin. The polished stone is a muted, deep green, transitioning into dark gray mottling and thin, dark veins. A prominent white, cloudy inclusion marks the inner edge of the rim. Fine lines and hairline cracks scatter across the surface, which rests on a low foot that elevates the form and highlights the stone's dense, organic patterns.
