Description

Ivory diptychs (two panels hinged together) were used for private devotion by their aristocratic owners. The scenes represented here are Christ’s Entry into Jerusalem, the Raising of Lazarus, the Crucifixion, and Christ’s Entombment. They suggest choices made by the original owner who wished to contemplate these aspects of Christ’s passion.
A vertical ivory relief features two scenes framed by elaborate pointed arches. In the top register, figures with slender bodies and flowing drapery surround Christ, who gestures toward Lazarus emerging from a tomb. Below, Christ is centered on a cross. To the left, women stand together; to the right, three men gather, one pointing upward. Intricate carving defines the hair and pleated robes of the cream-colored figures within the rectangular panel.
