Description

Ivory diptychs (two panels hinged together) were used for private devotion by their aristocratic owners. The scenes represented here are Christ’s Entry into Jerusalem, the Raising of Lazarus, the Crucifixion, and Christ’s Entombment. They suggest choices made by the original owner who wished to contemplate these aspects of Christ’s passion.
A vertically oriented ivory carving depicts two horizontal scenes framed by decorative, pointed arches. In the top register, Christ sits sideways on a donkey, riding toward a turreted city gate, followed by a crowd. A figure perches in a tree above. Below, figures mourn over Christ's limp body on a platform. Mary cradles his head on the left, while others lean over him and one kneels at his feet. Small angels fill the lower corners.
