Did You Know?

After Japan was opened to the West in the 1860s, Western craftsmen exposed to these new artistic sensibilities popularized the delicate natural and floral motifs that were characteristic of Japanese design.
A square gilt metal frame encases a circular cloisonné scene on a textured gold ground. Two birds with black caps perch on a thorny branch among yellow, red, and deep purple leaves. Surrounding the scene, metalwork dragons coil against a green fabric border, flanking circular symbols. A monogram marks the lower right, while the outer border is incised with repeating floral medallions and intricate vine scrollwork.
