Did You Know?

The lower portion of the silk is woven with 21 parallel lines.

Description

On the upper part of the fragment, a kneeling archer aims to the left. On the opposite side of a tree, another archer aims toward a camel. The animal’s mouth is open with its tongue extended in surprise as a large feline pounces on its back.

The Arabic inscription along the left edge gives a spurious date and name of the purported maker.
A horizontally long silk textile fragment features a narrative frieze against a tan ground. Two kneeling archers flank a stylized red tree, aiming bows toward a dark beast pouncing on a large red camel. A vertical column of Kufic script borders the scene on the right. Below, dense parallel lines cover the fabric. Woven in shades of red and brown, the stylized figures show visible wear throughout the delicate, fragmented piece.
