Description

In cloisonné enameling, the decorative patterns are outlined by soldering metal wires (usually copper) to a metal base, creating a network of cells, or cloisons, to be filled with powdered enamels. After firing, the enamels are polished to create a smooth surface level with the cloisons. The exposed metal surfaces are gilt.
A footed bowl with cloisonné enamel, fine gold wires outline shapes filled with colored glass. Winding vines with green leaves and large red and yellow flowers cover a turquoise background. Narrow bands with small motifs encircle the upper and lower body. The gold-colored metal interior and rim appear weathered with dark pits. These intricate floral designs continue across the splayed foot. The exterior's vibrant patterns contrast with the aged gold surface of the base.
