Description

With its eggshell-thin walls and low-relief decoration, this vessel is one of the very finest examples of Mit Rahina ware. The decoration is a system of friezes incorporating non-Egyptian motifs; the griffins and rosettes are Persian, while the egg-and-dart edge pattern is Greek. Contrasting hues and traces of gold hint at an original appearance that must have been stunning.
A spherical faience vessel glazed in muted green features horizontal bands of carved decoration. Near the top opening, many-petaled flowers sit above a braided pattern. A wide central band depicts winged lion-like creatures with curled tails pacing left. Vertical, rounded grooves taper toward the base. The weathered surface shows subtle texture, with the detailed frieze and repeating motifs encircling the vessel's spherical body.
