Description

Both functional and elegant, this is a container for an ink stone, brushes, and ink from a set of writing tools that included a larger box for paper. Against a sleek gold lacquered ground, its artist has used restraint in sprinkled powder decoration (maki-e) to produce the design of cockscomb and harvested rice on the interior of the lid.
A square lacquer and wood box lid features rounded corners and a shimmering, metallic gold surface. Against the gold background, a cluster of large, multi-petaled chrysanthemums with detailed dark-veined leaves occupies the lower right. A dark plum branch arches from the left toward the center and top, dotted with small round buds and five-petaled blossoms. The intricate floral scene is rendered entirely in dark, fine-lined patterns.
