Description

This panel is likely from a christening mantle, a decorative shawl or cape worn during the procession at a christening. This example features radiant gold thread enhanced with eight vibrant colors of shiny silk thread that create a delicate pattern of blossoms issuing from ornate stems. The decoration forms the main field and two end sections bordered by foliate motifs.
A horizontally long silk cloth is embroidered with interlocking vine patterns in glinting gold thread and small yellow, pink, and light blue flowers. All set against a muted bronze background, intricate borders with leaf-shaped edges frame the rectangular field. At either end, vertical sections of denser floral motifs break the repeating pattern. The metallic stitching creates a textured, reflective surface across the entire ornate panel.
