Description

Lobed Mirror with Two Phoenixes and Floral Displays, 8th century ad China, Tang dynasty (ad 618-907) CMA 1995.348 [Cat. no. 66.a]
An eight-lobed bronze mirror, a circular disk with a dark, polished surface, features low-relief carvings around a central rounded knob. Flanking the center, two crested birds with ornate, scrolling tails are facing in. Above sits an open flower with leaves, while a cluster of floral buds on a scrolling stem appears below. Green patina marks the bottom edge of the raised rim, contrasting with the mirror's smooth, metallic finish.
