Description

Mirror with Twin Carp, about 1200-25 China, Jin dynasty (1115-1234) CMA 1995.379 [Cat. no. 86]
A circular bronze mirror with a weathered, greenish-gray and brown oxidized surface depicts two carp swimming clockwise around a small central knob. The detailed, scaled fish twist amidst a relief of swirling wave patterns. One carp is positioned at the upper left, while the other curves at the lower right. A thick, raised rim frames the entire composition, which displays a rough, aged texture from centuries of use throughout.
