Description

California artist Jay Musler often uses commercial, pre-manufactured glass pieces, or blanks, which he modifies by cutting and slumping (heating the glass until it is soft enough to shape gently), and then decorates with oil paint and sandblasting.
A slumped glass vessel features a wide, shallow bowl of mottled red and orange glass with a jagged, irregular rim. Small tabs and circular holes detail the edge. Rising from the center is a tall, tapered column constructed from dark brown, brick-like mosaic pieces. A thin red band circles the top opening. The vessel juxtaposes the fluid, fiery quality of the basin with the rigid, architectural structure of its central masonry spire.
