Description

California artist Jay Musler often uses commercial, pre-manufactured glass pieces, or blanks, which he modifies by cutting and slumping (heating the glass until it is soft enough to shape gently), and then decorates with oil paint and sandblasting.
A slumped glass and plate-glass mosaic sculpture consists of a gnarled, horizontal form with a textured, uneven surface. On the right, the thick trunk terminates in a bulbous, translucent milky-white tip marked by a dark reddish-brown band. Extending left, the form splits into three twisted branches. Muted olive green and yellow tones cover the surface, accented by reddish-brown streaks. The light glints off the glass, highlighting its organic, undulating curves.
