Description

The 1520s Hours Workshop produced luxury books of hours for a wealthy, often royal, clientele. Recent evidence points to Paris as the site of the workshop’s activity under the direction of Antwerp-born miniaturist Noël Bellemare (died 1546). Containing fuschia pinks and bright acid greens, the palette is unusual in French manuscript painting of the period. Instead, Bellemare’s miniatures point directly to Antwerp painting at the time.
A vertically oriented tempera and ink painting on vellum depicts a man with light skin tone and a bushy white beard kneeling within an ornate gold frame. Facing our left, he wears a blue floral-patterned tunic and a maroon cloak. A gold harp and crown rest on the ground. In the background, a stone castle stands beneath a blue sky where a red winged figure flies. Blue panels line the architectural frame.
