Description

The 1520s Hours Workshop produced luxury books of hours for a wealthy, often royal, clientele. Recent evidence points to Paris as the site of the workshop’s activity under the direction of Antwerp-born miniaturist Noël Bellemare (died 1546). Containing fuschia pinks and bright acid greens, the palette is unusual in French manuscript painting of the period. Instead, Bellemare’s miniatures point directly to Antwerp painting at the time.
A manuscript leaf features a central block of black and red Latin text framed by a dense botanical border on a gold background. To the left, large green seed pods climb a vertical stalk. Pink blossoms cluster along the bottom, while slender vines with small blue and red flowers border the right side. An illuminated blue and gold initial highlights the script. The right parchment edge terminates in an irregular, deckled line.
