Description

Jean Prouvé, one of the most important and innovative 20th-century French designers, was designing and producing chairs in the "moderne" taste by the 1920s. Although he became an architect, furniture design always played a significant role in his work. During the late 1930s and 40s, Prouvé’s style matured with his furniture showing innovative uses of sheet and tubular metal. His Compass chair and matching desk-an example of which is already in the museum collection-are among his most famous designs and date from around 1950.
