Description

Powell is a young and recently recognized member of the American studio glass movement. (Studio glass can be defined as glass made by single individuals, or, at most, a small number of people working outside industrial settings.) Like many glassmakers, he trained as a ceramist. This large blown glass object is a relatively early and unusually attractive example of his work. Not surprisingly, these very decorative vessels have won Powell great popularity with glass collectors.
A multicolored blown glass vessel features a wide, rounded body tapering into a tall, slender neck. Vertical yellow and brown lines at the top transition into undulating horizontal bands of orange, deep brown, and blue honeycomb cells. Large amber circular forms mark the lower section, surrounded by smaller yellow and pink cells. The smooth, glossy surface displays complex, overlapping patterns reminiscent of biological structures across the entire teardrop-shaped form.
