Description

Place was important to Baumann, who imbued his prints with the ambiance of each locale. He wanted to depict every region as he found it, retaining its individual character. “What I produced in Brown County reflected the homey honesty of the place,” he enthused. “It was one of those restful moments in art when a house and a corn shock in the autumn haze still excited everyone’s interest. The place was so full of things that had not been exhausted as material. . . . Brown County was a sort of refuge.”
A horizontally oriented woodcut depicts a grove of trees against rolling hills. Left, a massive tree with dense, orange-brown foliage dominates the frame. Right, stand three thin gray trunks with sparse brown leaves. In the lower third, tangled brown and tan strokes cover the terrain. Behind the trees, brown hills sit beneath a pale blue and white sky. Handwritten text appears in the white margin below the composition.
