Description

The dark, tall Ponderosa pines in the foreground counterbalance the vast, vivid chasm behind, while the saturated colors suggest the clarity and intensity of the sunlight and arid atmosphere of the Southwest. Baumann uses color to evoke the ambiance of each locale and to depict the unpredictable, sensuous effects of nature. While dramatic shifts in light and color emphasize the vastness of the landscape, pink, printed over blue in the middle ground, produces lavender, creating the illusion that the canyon, bathed in shadow, is receding.
