Did You Know?

The Chimú forged an empire that thrived until the 1460s, when the Inka incorporated it into their own imperial domain.

Description

This garment may have been found with others in the collection that formed a matched set worn by a noble of the Chimú, who rose to power on Peru’s north coast after 1000 AD.
A padded cream cotton hat is formed by a vertically long, rectangularly-shaped base with rectangular strips hanging down on either side, ending in fringes. Loose, wavy strands alternate with a tightly woven background to create a repeated birdlike creature pattern. In profile, the bird has a long, thick beak, wide legs, and triangular tail feathers. This pattern extends across the hat and in the lower half the hanging strips.
