Description

This rectangular vessel by the artist Kiyomi Iwata has an ethereal quality with brilliant gold leaf applied on translucent silk organza. The materials of Iwata’s sculptures relate to the kimono, a traditional Japanese garment from her country of origin. The copper wire she sometimes incorporates is a reference to American technology in her adopted home of the United States.
An upright rectangular vessel features translucent white silk organza detailed with gridded rows of crinkled gold leaf squares. Stitched across the exterior, the gold squares reveal gauzy fabric beneath. The structure slumps slightly, topped by an open rim of uneven, frayed white threads. Smaller gold fragments cluster near the base, and the entire form is set against a dark gray background.
